When you read a sentence a second time, something you missed on the first pass sometimes surfaces. The placement of a comma. The angle at which one word meets the next. A pause where one sentence gives way to another. On the first reading these things are absorbed into the flow of information; on the second they rise briefly, and often slip away before you have stayed with them long enough.

The pieces collected here are traces of staying with such places a moment longer. Whether the occasion is an event, a work, or a landscape, something tends to remain that does not resolve at first encounter. Looking once more at what was there before it disperses—what it was, more often than not, becomes legible only after the looking.
